Abstract
This study intends to provide basic data to help with career education and career decision of students in dental hygiene by analyzing career barriers affecting the level of career decision of students in 3-year colleges and 4-year universities.
From October to November 2012, three institutions of 3-year colleges and 4-year universities located in the Busan region were selected. The survey was administered to 788 students in the department of dental hygiene in the institutions (536 students in 3-year institutions and 252 students in 4-year institutions). Statistical analysis was conducted with SPSS (version 18.0). The level of career decision was 49.17¡¾7.70 for the 3-year institutions and 48.89¡¾7.08 for the 4-year institutions. While the scores on career barriers were 95.64¡¾17.83 for the 3-year institutions and 95.50¡¾16.34 for the 4-year institutions, there were not any differences which were statistically significant. Career barriers that influence the level of career decision were the lack of information factor, the future uncertainty factor, the lack of self-clarity factor, and the conflict with others factor in the respective order for the 3-year institutions. For the 4-year institutions, the barriers were the lack of information factor, the lack of interest factor, and the conflict with others factor. It is concluded that the students in the 4-year institutions should be encouraged to participate in character education and an educational program on social development as the conflict with others is a career barrier. For the 3-year institutions, it is deemed necessary to develop the abilities that match individual characteristics and talents through continuous career counseling with students so that the students are presented with clear directions for future careers and develop clear self-identities because the future uncertainty factor and the lack of self-clarity factor influenced the level of career decision the most in this group.
